Paging Dr. Google
Who is your favorite Doctor?! Well, according to a Pew Internet and American Life study, it’s Dr. Google!
80% of internet users have searched a health related topic online. That means around 93 million Americans are using the internet to search health information or advice for things like medical problems, medications, sexual health, alternative medicine, depression, anxiety, stress, diet, nutrition and vitamins.
If you have a symptom or a question you aren’t going to your provider first, you’re most likely going to Google to find your answer before scheduling a medical appointment. And in the end you may be over scheduling appointments with your provider due to your google findings. Who hasn’t done a quick google search for “cause of sore throat” and through webMD symptom checker ended up with esophageal cancer that then maybe kind of turned into a panic attack leading to an urgent care visit.
Every year Americans spend 20 billion in unnecessary medical visits. And more and more patients are showing up to their provider self diagnosed with some disease based on a recent google search.
Maybe you don’t trust your provider, maybe the answers you are getting about your health and wellness aren’t working for you, or maybe you love your provider but the 10 minutes you get face to face isn’t enough time. To explore your health options send me a message by signing up for my newsletter.
