6 Minutes Of Reading
Curated Moment: Grab A Book!
If you are overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious it can be very difficult to focus. When your mind is racing the thought of reading might sound terrible, but it’s been found to significantly reduce the physical symptoms associated with anxiety (i.e increased heart rate, blood pressure and muscle tension).
Mindlab International at the University of Sussex conducted a study looking at stress relievers and their level of effectiveness.
The study found that the subjects only needed to read for six minutes to slow down the heart rate and ease tension in the muscles. Stress was reduced by 68%. In fact, reading got subjects stress levels lower than before they started.
By engaging the parts of the brain required to read words, comprehend the subject matter, and relate it to personal experience, reading may push out stress and promote a sense of meditative calm.
Other studies have shown that reading keeps your mind alert, delays cognitive decline, increase connectivity in parts of the brain related to language, and enhances perspective taking.
Grab your favorite book and enjoy a good story while you reap the benefits of a calm mind and body.
